We had a perfect visit. Encouraged by our own research the guide Augustin from Tilcara showed us several places off the beaten track. If you want to see the salt basins and the salt flat you don't ne…Full review by Guide20542383393

A "must see" if you are visiting NW Argentina. It's a 3 to 4 hour drive from Salta an hour less from Jujuy, on a scenic and, nearer the Flats, very twisty road through the mountains. Entry to the f…Full review by PCO

Dear Mariel, We are going to be in salta just for 2 days. I was wondering if you can help me with some information. How long did it take to get to the Salinas Grandes? What is the weather like there? Can one drive and is it safe to drive on your own? We will be there 8 - 10 of Aug. Thanks

Hi, From the city of Salta it takes around 3 to 4 hours to get to the Salinas. I recommend you to check with your hotel the road conditions as sometimes they become blocked due to heavy rain or some rock crumbling by the road. The way up there is generally safe and you will surely not be the only ones on that route, I don't mean it will be crowded at all but you won't be alone if anything were to happen ;). You wanna make sure to bring good sun protection as the sun will be radiating from all directions, reflecting on the very white salt deposits. The weather is generally good there as it's a dry area and you will be above the bottom layer of clouds, so I wouldn't worry about it! One thing, it's better to go there early, because if there are some clouds around, in the late afternoon (5 pm, 6 pm), they are going to go uphill and visibility might be bad. This happened to us and we had to wait a bit until it cleared out. The way there is incredibly beautiful, you can visit very pretty towns as well (like Purmamarca, Tilcara) loaded of regional culture, and if you're lucky you can see some wild alpacas running around!
