Hello, we visited today December 19th and there was definitely plenty of snow on top. It was a warm 26 degrees (Celsius) at the bottom of the mountain and a cooler 11 degrees up top - although we found that walking around up there we soon warmed up. Make sure you wear shoes with a good grip though as lots of the trails are snow covered and can get slippery.
Q:

Drbrad: Although there is a well-known trail from Palm Springs to the summit of San Jacinto, it is not recommended, especially if the tram is closed. The Skyline Trail, also known as the Cactus to Clouds Trail, is a beast. 17.5 miles one way with a 10,577 ft vertical. The first 12 miles takes you from Palm Springs to Long Valley (tram stop) and climbs 8,000 ft. This section is steep, exposed, and has no water supply. The views of the valley are breath-taking. The hike from Long Valley to the summit is gorgeous and there are seasonal water sources. If the tram were running, you could then return 6 miles from the summit and take the tram to the valley. Here is a better alternative: Highway 74 is a lovely from Palm Springs to Idyllwild. There are multiple popular trails that lead to San Jacinto. The route up Devil's Slide Trail is approximately 16 miles round trip and briefly follows a section of the PCT. It is a great hike and provides panoramic views of both the desert and the mountain range. Good Luck!
Q:
How long is the actual tram ride?
A:
20 minutes but the tram is big and roomy and the 360 degree revealing floor and handles to hold onto if your nervous are great.
