Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed a new law requiring law enforcement agencies to conduct more thorough background checks on prospective officers, following the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey by a sheriff's deputy with a history of misconduct.

Just over a year after police fatally shot Sonya Massey in her home, Illinois has introduced a police reform bill named in her memory.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker on Tuesday is expected to sign new legislation requiring more thorough background checks before hiring police officers, a law inspired by the shooting death of Sonya Massey.Massey was shot and killed by former Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy Sean Grayson in July 2024 inside her home near Springfield.
