Near the woodsy high desert town of Bend, Oregon ... A bright sun cast sharp shadows in trees and everything was hushed, as if the forest was enjoying a long winter slumber.

This year the Statesman Journal outdoors staff went diving into an underwater forest, skied during an extreme heat wave and reeled some chunky brook trout from Oregon’s backcountry lakes.
