John Carter will spend 36 months in jail for the death of his then-fiancee Katelyn Markham in 2011, the maximum amount to which he could be sentenced.

John Carter was charged with two counts of murder in relation to the death of his fiancée Katelyn Markham.

Prosecutors charged John Carter with murder in the spring of 2023, almost a dozen years after Katelyn Markham disappeared from her Fairfield home. Her remains were found in Indiana in 2013.

John Carter was sentenced Thursday in Butler County Common Pleas Court. The case against him spanned more than a decade and involved several agencies.
