US President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday slapping sanctions on the International Criminal Court for "baseless" investigations targeting America and its close ally Israel, the White House said.

The order will include financial sanctions and visa restrictions against ICC officials found to have assisted in investigations of U.S. citizens or allies.

Citing the global judicial body’s investigation into Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Trump administration used an executive order to mete out punishment for what it sees as overstepping.

The Hague-based body has created a "shameful moral equivalency" between Hamas and Israel, the White House says.

The order Trump signed accuses the ICC of engaging in “illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel."

The president signed an executive order that said the I.C.C.’s actions against Israel and preliminary investigations into the United States “set a dangerous precedent.”
