The story of Outer Banks wild horses has survived 500 years. Their future is not guaranteed. Only about 100 horses remain of the 5,000-6,000 estimated a century ago.

After taking a second look at what was thought to be a cow tooth, one scientist has found evidence to help solve the mysterious origin story for these wild ponies.

November to March is considered the off-season in the Outer Banks. For the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, things slow down, but they never really have an off-season.
