Colossal though said the dire wolf was now "the world's first de-extincted animal". It has publicised its efforts to use similar cutting edge genetic techniques in its plan to bring back extinct animals including the woolly mammoth and the Tasmanian tiger.

Scientists working for Dallas-based biotech company Colossal Biosciences claim to have brought the dire wolf, which went extinct about 12,500 years ago, back to life.

Three white puppies were born in the last six months, each through surrogate domestic dogs who had no idea they were carrying an extinct species.

Colossal Biosciences said the first dire wolf pups were born on Oct. 1, 2024, using the CRISPR gene-editing technology and DNA extracted from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old ear bone. Domestic dogs served as surrogates for the embryos.
