President Jimmy Carter will be honored with two funeral services in Washington and Georgia on Thursday, Jan. 9, before his private hometown burial in Plains. The national day of mourning will bring together all five living U.

President Jimmy Carter will be honored in a state funeral Thursday, culminating days of marking the contributions of a man who after leaving office remained an influential leader on the world stage.

Former President Jimmy Carter has been lying in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, the 35th person in American history to receive such an honor.

Jimmy Carter’s remains, flown from Georgia on Tuesday, will be taken in a procession to the U.S. Capitol, where he will lie in state for two days.

Carter will remain at the Capitol until Thursday morning, when he is transported to Washington National Cathedral for a state funeral.
