Large-scale mortality among snow geese has led the Pennsylvania Game Commission to declare Lehigh Valley the epicenter of a resurgent bird flu outbreak.

There’s been a shortage and price increase of eggs available at grocery stores nationwide, and Western Pennsylvania is not immune. Highly pathogenic avian influenza, also known as the bird flu, is the culprit.

More snow geese suspected to be infected with highly contagious bird flu have been found dead in the Lehigh Valley, where Pennsylvania wildlife officials announced the likely presence of the virus among the migratory waterfowl at the beginning of January.
