The Black Watch paid an emotional visit to St Valery-en-Caux in Normandy to commemorate the ill-fated defence of the region by the 51st Highland Division.

The name of St Valery-en-Caux is enshrined in the psyche and engraved on the memorials of every Highlands and Islands community.

Don Sheppard, who has died aged 104, took part in the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6 1944 while serving as a Royal Engineer with the 51st Highland Division.
