We’re once again visiting the Bingham Canyon Mine operated by Rio Tinto Kennecott this week. Said to be the world’s largest man-made excavation, the main pit is 2.5 miles wide and 3/4 of a mile deep. Mining started here in 1863, and it remains one of America’s most essential and valuable mining operations. Not only does the ore fulfill a large percentage of our growing copper demand, but it also yields gold, silver, molybdenum, and tellurium. #betterdirtworld | Aaron Witt

Chuquicamata is one of the largest copper mines in the world. Located in northern Chile, the facility has been open since 1882, but much of the mine’s excavation and expansion has occurred since the late 1960s when the Chilean government assumed control of the copper industry.
