In 1957, the United States conducted its first underground nuclear test, known as Rainier, at the Nevada Test Site. The device was detonated inside a carved tunnel deep within the rock, marking a major shift from open-air tests to underground experiments that produced far less radioactive fallout. This is an original 1950’s Nuclear Fallout Detector! After shaking the Fallout Detector, the red plastic beads are given a static charge that causes them to rise up. Exposure to radiation ionizes the air inside the device. When the red beads lose their charge, they drop to the bottom of the cylinder.
