Some of humanity’s most advanced technology is inspired by nature. This animation demonstrates how coronagraph instruments on telescopes imitate a natural eclipse. When the bright glare of a star, including our sun, is blocked, other fainter light sources become visible. During a solar eclipse, stars can be seen during the brief, false night. When telescopes observe distant star systems with a coronagraph, the planets orbiting that star become detectable. Credit: NASA, ESA, Leah Hustak (STScI).

What's a coronagraph? (And what does it have to do with an eclipse?) A coronagraph is an instrument used to block the light of a star so that the planets around it can be more easily seen. It's basically an artificial eclipse – which is exactly where the idea came from! (The “corona” in coronagraph refers to the Sun’s outermost atmosphere, which is visible during a solar eclipse.) The first coronagraph was invented in 1930 by Bernard Lyot to recreate a total solar eclipse at will, and while the

NOAA's Compact Coronagraph (CCOR) developed by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory is revolutionizing space weather forecasting with its cutting-edge technology. This small yet powerful telescope creates an artificial eclipse of the Sun, allowing scientists to observe the solar corona and track coronal mass ejections (CMEs)—massive bubbles of plasma that can disrupt Earth's technological infrastructure. CMEs pose significant threats to GPS navigation, civil aviation, and power grids, making timel
